Research

My general research interests lie in high-energy-density (HED) physics, specifically laboratory systems created through laser-matter interactions. This environment lends itself to a range of interesting plasma phenomena including: inertial confinement fusion, hydrodynamic instabilities (RT, RM, KH) in the HED regime, laser-plasma instabilities, stellar evolution, supernova remnants, and accretion systems.

Presently, my postdoctoral research has focused on the generation of magnetized plasma outflows. We built a custom-designed solenoid capable of delivering a uniform ~5 T magnetic field over a ~80 mm3 volume. Inside this solenoid a laser-irradiated target produced a supersonic plasma flow. The effects of the magnetic field on the plasma were diagnosed using an optical probe beam.

My dissertation research focused on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in laser-produced plasmas and the spontaneous generation of magnetic fields due to this process. Using a combination of proton and x-ray radiographic techniques, this work provided the first direct observations of these elusive fields during the linear growth phase.

Personal Introduction

I grew up outside of Tacoma, WA and moved to Seattle when I started at UW and began my long college career. I met my Italian wife, Eleonora, in Germany during a study-abroad program during my time at UW. We eventually moved to Boston, MA when I attended grad school at MIT. Eleonora began her MBA program at UM in Ann Arbor and I came to work with my current group at UM when I finished my PhD.

When I am not working on my research, I love to travel and interact with people of different cultures; one of the things I also love about my job. I enjoy playing frisbee with my two border collies (Kepler and Lyra) and taking them out with me on runs when I am at home. Recently, Eleonora and I acquired our scuba diving certifications and now we love traveling to new places and diving in some of the most beautiful waters in the world.

Diagnostic Experience:

  • Optical - time-gated interferometry, Faraday rotation, Schlieren imaging, streak cameras, UV spectrometry
  • X-ray: spectrometry with crystals and transmission gratings, imaging with gated framing cameras
  • Protons: radiography, magnetic spectrometry, ranging spectrometry

Simulation Experience: Geant4, FLASH, Hyades, MCNP

High-Energy-Density Physics Research Interests: Neutron and X-ray sources, laser-matter interactions, plasma hydrodynamics, inertial confinement fusion, stellar evolution, electric and mangetic field generation in plasma, nuclear and plasma diagnsotics, astrophysical jet formation and evolution, astrophysical nucleosynthesis.
