Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transport / Radiobrightness models for prairie and arctic terrains; and the microwave brightness measure of water stored in soil, vegetation and snow.

Specializations and Research Interests

  • Development and field calibration of Land Surface Process (LSP) models of land-atmosphere energy and moisture fluxes for northern prairie and arctic tundra
  • Assimilation of satellite microwave brightness data for improved estimates of moisture profiles in prairie and arctic soils and snow
  • Development of new technology microwave radiometers for use on towers, aircraft, and satellites

  • Scientist-Astronaut & Senior Scientist-Astronaut, NASA
  • Mission Scientist, Apollo 13 & 16
  • Mission Specialist, Space Shuttle, Spacelab 2 Mission, 1985 — a solar astronomy & plasma physics mission
  • Program Scientist, Space Station
  • Recognition and modeling of scatter darkening as a significant factor in the radiobrightness of sea ice, snow, and frozen or dry soils
  • Use of satellite radiobrightness as feedback to temporal models of surface hydrology
