Sequential Graduate/Undergraduate Studies Programs (SGUS)
Please note: You must be a current University of Michigan student to be admitted into the SGUS program.
Students interested in completing their undergraduate and master’s level education in five years have three uniquely designed AOSS programs to select from: Applied Climate, Atmospheric Science and Space Engineering. In our increasingly technical world, master’s degrees are becoming the minimum accepted level of education in the our industry. AOSS SGUS programs offer breadth, depth and hands-on experience in the area you select and optimizes your career opportunities. The SGUS program can open doors that a BSE degree alone cannot.
SGUS students are allowed to "double count" six or nine credit hours for the three degrees, bachelor’s and master’s. Each degree is awarded upon completion of the requirements. The programs require 128 total credits for the BSE plus 30 or 31 credits for the Master's degree. Six or nine credits may be double counted between the BSE and the MS or MEng. Please be sure to speak with an advisor as early as possible.
SGUS/Master of Engineering in Applied Climate
The AOSS MEng in Applied Climate is a professional degree designed for students whose interests lie in applying a basic understanding of climate science to engineered solutions requiring: adaptation to intensities and frequencies of extremes of weather associated with regional climate change, and mitigation of regional and global climate change through actions such as altered emission of short- and long-lived radiatively active gases and aerosols. SGUS/Master of Science in Atmospheric/Space Science Program
The AOSS SGUS program is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge of atmospheric/space science and the various components of each system and to increase your depth of knowledge beyond the bachelor degree level in an atmospheric or space related discipline. MORE INFO
SGUS/Master of Engineering in Space Engineering
Developed with Aerospace Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the AOSS Space Engineering SGUS program teaches the systems approach to conceiving, designing, managing and operating complex space systems and provides you with practical experience in space system design, project development and management — the very combination of knowledge and skills that the space industry is looking for when hiring new engineers. General Admission Information
Please note: You must be a current University of Michigan student to be admitted to the SGUS program Application Process
- Apply to the AOSS SGUS program (PDF Application). Please be sure to have it signed by the SGUS Program advisor, Dr. Frank Marsik (atmospheric/space science), Dr. Natasha Andronova (applied climate) or Dr. Darren McKague (space engineering) and your undergraduate advisor.
- Schedule a meeting with Dr. Marsik, Dr. Andronova or Dr. McKague. Your SGUS application will be approved by the Department and, for SGUS-MS students pending approval of your Election Form by the Rackham Graduate School.
- During your senior year you must also:
- Atmospheric/Space Science SGUS students apply to the MS program through the Rackham Graduate School (Program Code 01981).
- Applied Climate SGUS students apply to the MEng program through the College of Engineering (Program Code 02051).
- Space Engineering SGUS students apply to the MEng program through the College of Engineering (Program Code 01867).
Graduation
Upon completion of your undergraduate degree requirements, you will need to apply for graduation to receive your BSE degree.
Please Note: During your senior year, a graduate application must be submitted to Rackham or the College by the required deadlines.
